In this tutorial series, we’ll walk you through everything you need to get started — from setting up your canvas to match real-world quilt dimensions, to using grids and snapping tools to keep your blocks perfectly aligned. You’ll learn how to draw and duplicate quilt blocks, fill them with colour to audition fabric combinations, and arrange them into a full quilt layout. No prior experience with graphic design software is required; just a curiosity for your craft and a willingness to explore a new creative tool. By the end of the series, you’ll have both a digital design workflow and a printable pattern ready to take to your sewing room.
Inkscape Tutorial 3 – Setting up a new drawing
Setting up a grid
To display a grid, first right click anywhere on the page and select “Document Properties”
On the properties page, select the “Grids” tab
Select “New”
For a 1/4″ grid, select “in” as the Grid units, and set the X and Y spacing to 0.25, with Major Grid Line every 4
For a 1/8″ grid, change the X and Y spacing to 1/8 (0.125) and change the Major Grid Line Every to 8. TIP – you can just type 1/8 into the spacing field and it will convert it to the decimal number for you automatically.
